I can’t stress enough, about how you really need to know about how the business works…Actors…before you jump in.

Do you want to know about the business, really? Why television, especially, is so difficult?  Sutter is absolutely succinct about how it works.

He happens to be a writer, and a funny one, too. At the same time that he’s the most accurate, and most blatant.

He’s also married to Katey Sagal, and you gotta love him for that.  He’s got a blog called SutterInk. Even though he tells-it-like-it-is, in the business that demands everyone to tell-it-like-it-isn’t…Sutter has survived, and thrived, and reads some juicy selections aloud, on this radio show I embedded here.

If you are an actor, and you have this idea that what TV executives are looking for is talent, is creativity…You should listen to this.

Illusions don’t produce prosperity, at all.

Knowing the facts, and the “lay of the land”, gives you the information you need, to be able to succeed. You can’t surmount hurdles that you don’t know exist.

(I know that is one of my big ‘themes’, but I can’t stress it enough…Especially, since I have been talking to actors on Twitter, and during my weekly, Sunday Brunch With Dana! Surprising amount of misconception going on…)

I met Bernardo Villela on Twitter. Many of you who follow me on Twitter (3128 of you’s!) know that on Twitter, fluently, I tweet links to news items that I feel may be interesting to my actor reader base, and the other creatives who tweet with me.  Out of all those many people, some I connect with more personally. Bernardo is one of them.

When I originally tweeted out the link, to the The Guardian interview with actor Rupert Everett , where Mr. Everett admonishes gay actors not to come out…I heard from Bernardo right away.  There’s all kinds of ways that people respond on Twitter, some retweet my links, and some write to me directly, on Twitter.

Coincidentally, I had recently done the opposite: I had followed 2 Twitter links of Bernardo’s, just prior. One was to a YouTube video of his about a Delaware theatre ensemble. The second was a writing piece, of Bernardo’s, in the Wilmington Movie Examiner.

So I asked him if he’d like to write something about his reaction to the Rupert  Everett piece. Here is what he sent.

Much is being made about Rupert Everett’s recent interview in which he advises young gay actors to stay in the closet. The first thing that comes to mind when hearing that is always consider the source of such advice, which I will expound upon later.

First,  I think it is important to note one thing. It does matter to an extent, in my opinion, what you seek to do in entertainment as to howoutspoken you are. Everett was quoted in many publications as saying he wanted to be a gay Bond. It was a miscalculation on his part: one, because he was putting out in the media as a desired project and two, due to the fact that he was dealing with an iconic figure and changing the nature of the James Bond series in that way is no more realistic now than it was then- regardless of whether or not it’s a good idea. The reason it’s a miscalculation mostly was because he was just saying it and there was little to no evidence that he got past writing it (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0080199/). What this does highlight is that you can be out and outspoken when you are behind the scenes.

Gus Van Sant, John Waters and Joel Schumacher amongst others have been out and making films for a long time and there’s a reason for that because they make them. They express themselves through films and don’t, in most cases sell, them. Actors do and the sad reality is that it becomes harder to sell a romantic comedy with an openly gay actor as the lead, again not to say an openly gay actor can’t succeed.

Rupert Everett came out in 1989 and also consider that he has been quoted as early as 2005 as saying it’s the biggest mistake he made in his career. Ellen DeGeneres came out in 1997 and it was necessary at the time that her show become about her character’s and her revelation, however, that ultimately is what lead to it’s cancellation. As big a milestone as it was for many it was when the show jumped the shark. Yet Ellen laid low for a while and eventually came back and bigger than ever. She never made her sexuality an issue again until she had a foothold on daytime, which is just an extension of her doing standup so I refuse to not see that as performance.

A perfect example of it’s not about coming out but about what you do once you’re out there is the whole Adam Lambert kerfuffle.  I will readily admit that I almost never watch American Idol except for audition specials until my ears bleed and then I change the channel, however, you inevitably hear people talking about it and I once heard four women of varied ages all acknowledge that they knew he’s gay even before he was out but it didn’t change their opinion of him. Going over the top and too risque on national television in your first huge performance, however, can alienate people. What you do in your act is up to you as performer but don’t act surprised if people are turned off, even Madonna wasn’t always shocking on TV check her SNL performance she sang “Bad Girl” on a sitting on a stool, sometimes talent is enough.

Just scanning articles related to Rupert Everett on the IMDb you can see that he had falling outs with Julia Roberts, Madonna and Colin Firth, the last being on the set of a film. This kind of history doesn’t help. Producers and directors don’t want someone likely to cause tension on set. It should also be noted that Sir Ian McKellen came out a year before Rupert Everett did but he was 49 when he did so, at least publicly. So having a track record doesn’t hurt but other people have done so at the height of their career (Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell).

It also didn’t seem to be a hinderance to Anne Heche, Ellen’s first romantic link, it even propelled her to her one big silver screen appearance in Six Days and Seven Nights with Harrison Ford. I think anyone who remembers that time knows that it was the box office and her interviews that made her no longer a desirable starlet not her sexuality.

So where does all this seemingly contradictory information lead to? As with anything, especially a topic such as this, there are no easy answers:

First, take any and all advice on a subject so important with a grain of salt. Rupert Everett is speaking from his own personal experience and I do not begrudge him those feelings. However, I feel that part of what he perceived to be homophobia might’ve just been a reluctance to give him work based on his history or for performance reasons, the old casting axiom is still very true “You just never know and several factors could lead to a casting decision.” Though I think he means well, he is basing it on his experience and if no other actors come out there’s less chance for progress in LGBT rights. I hate to put that high a value on it but it’s true. The easiest ways to change attitudes are having people say “Well, so-and-so’s gay so maybe I’ll think that over.” People are fickle. In some cases it does seem to work in favor of a performer, Neil Patrick Harris seems to have gotten exponentially more popular since he came out.

The bottom line is, it should and must remain a personal choice and the best consul one can offer is to treat the public coming out similar to “private one” (i.e. friends and family) if you just can’t live in the closet any longer absolutely come out, it’s doing more harm than good. If you are a guarded person and can avoid the question like many actors have over the years it’s your prerogative to do so.

I think part of why we have discovered many actors are gay later in their life or career is not just a societal change in the acceptance of such information but also because many people have those that matter most know and those that don’t matter needn’t know. It’s a personal decision and not a business decision in my estimation. You must be absolutely certain. If you are fine leaving your private life private and want to make a go at it, kudos and similarly if you feel you can’t have that burden I say unburden it so long as you’re prepared to deal with the consequences because for every success I am sure there are many more who are not. If you are content with whatever you are able to achieve and are not prone to ask “What if?” go for it.

I think the one thing that can be most definitely noted is that if you reach a certain point and then come out from cases that I am aware of it has not been a hinderance. If you’re just starting out I can’t be sure it might be best as a business decision, if you must look at it that way, again it’s personal, leave it on a need to know basis, if you can deal with that.

Rupert Everett’s statement is that of a defeated man who is no longer willing to fight. He is seeking to guide others saying essentially “When you pick your battles, don’t pick this one.” I think it’s a rather backward statement for LGBT rights. You can come out if you so choose you just need to be more careful of what you say and do because like it or not that stigma exists. Perhaps Adam Lambert was being more calculated than I give him credit for and wanted to create a ruckus but it’s food for thought, if it was Britney Spears doing the same thing with her male dancers it’s not as big a deal on the news the next day. That’s the society we live in, sad but true. If you feel you must come out but at the same time you must realize what that means.

Ellen is probably your prime example. Few will likely face the examination she faced being a trailblazer but note how her comeback came. She was still the same person and without saying so reminded people of that fact and that she was beloved and only because she has a talk show do issues even get mentioned. Being political is dangerous and polarizing look at Sean Penn- endlessly talented and fiercely political such that his roles are few and far between not just because he’s selective I’m sure.

Examples can go on forever and there are never any guarantees about perception, or work, or attitudes. Come out if you have to but just know the rules. Hollywood, like high school, like life has different rules for different people when it so chooses . Some rules are always the same: make friends not enemies, do unto others as you would have others do unto you, etc.  Hollywood’s a game, know that you’re always playing learn the rules and play by the rules- your life, however, is your own and you make the rules there. The decision is in your hands and needs to come from within and not from others. Choose wisely but choose for yourself; listen to nothing but your heart.

Celebrity : Our Culture’s Most Famous, Most Revered, Are Actors Or Musicians.

Lately, on Twitter, there’s has been such a nasty influx of spam that utilizes the fame and name of Britney Spears.

The internet’s made the globe one culture, and nasty celebrity gossip is shared at the speed of light. It’s ‘viral’, supreme. Perez Hilton is himself an internet celeb because he is, well, a nasty celeb gossip.

Snarky is a new word, but being snarky isn’t new at all. Neither is celebrity gossip, fame, nor the-worship-of.

Nor, apparently, is sleeping with celebs, idealizing, idolizing.

A British schoolteacher named Tom Payne noticed how important celebrities were to his young students, and how much they wanted to be celebrities. So, he researched why. From that, he wrote a book called Fame: From The Bronze Age To Britney.

“Fame”…links the ancient, classical world and our modern, celebrity-worshipping culture. The book asks: “Why does anyone want to be famous?”

“I was teaching adolescent boys all about these ancient civilisations and it rapidly became apparent to me that they took all of this celebrity culture stuff rather seriously,” says the softly-spoken Payne, 38. “And I thought maybe I should take it seriously, too. It seemed like it was worth studying in a bit more detail. I’ve tried to take on these subjects in a manner that could almost be considered academic. Crucially, I also wanted it to be funny.”

“I think people often underestimate the relevance of classical texts to contemporary society. I think I’ve been aided by the success of films like… 300 and Troy, which have helped cast light on the relevant periods…”

The author soon began to see links between different celebrities’ stories; particularly, he says, the doomed:

“I saw this crime, punishment and regeneration pattern,” he adds.

Payne’s book’s title is taken from its first chapter; and it is here where the basest human tendency to criticise and revel in the misfortune of celebrities – particularly in the case of Spears – is explored. Her famous hair-cutting incident, lit by the flashbulbs of the world’s media, is comparable, claims the author, to the tales of human sacrifice as told in Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, in which hair is cut from the victim’s head, symbolising their path to self-destruction.

And the celebrity comparisons continue….

Can we think of anyone who has recently had sex with a celebrity, potentially in order to further their own career…”There is always a steady spate of these social climbing situations in the British tabloids, and the best equivalent I can think of is in Ovid’s Art of Love,” says Payne. “He discusses how people often try to have sex with people higher up the celebrity ladder than them, or pretend to have done so, to make themselves better than they are.”

Such thoughts also emerged in Greek myth when Dionysus became angered, after his aunt Agave claimed that his mother Semele had never slept with Zeus. “She taunted her sister by saying Zeus never shagged her,” concludes the author.

While they flourish, then, we treat our celebs as semi-divine. Words such as “diva” and “sex goddess” are dead giveaways. But the story doesn’t stop with our elevating them to divine status. Because we then have to kill them.

Fame suggests that for all our glossy surface ­modernity, the most primitive of all blood rites, human sacrifice, is still at the heart of our culture — a word that derives from same root as “cult”, after all. The only ­difference is we don’t acknowledge it any more.

Gross hypocrisy is also evident in the ploy of blaming “the media” for the deaths of our deities. As Payne pithily points out, “The media, they’re us.” The same public that laid down flowers and teddies for Diana bought the magazines that paid the paps to chase her to her death in the underpass. The same public buys magazines showing the most repulsively invasive “upskirt” photographs of Britney when she’s already near the edge of sanity. But, says Payne, this is exactly what tribal societies have always done. After worshipping their heroes for a season, they kill them. Quite often they then flay them and wear their skin, as in ancient Mexico, or eat them, or preserve body parts as relics.

Fred Frazier Reads Hollywood Actor Prep And Is An Actor On Twitter

I thought, wouldn’t it be  cool to give an actor, embarking on a career,  an opportunity to attend one of the events at The Academy Of Television Arts And Sciences?

…Those are the same people who hold the Emmys.

This particular  event was called The Performers Peer Group Event, and it was for the actors who are members of The Academy, and the Emmy Acting Category Nominees.  I asked Fred Frazier to come along, since I knew he was an  LA actor, and was someone I had a longterm relationship with, on Twitter.

A Director Panel, An Actor Panel, And A Screenwriter Panel At LAFF 2009

This Los Angeles Film Fest has been quite a full, action-packed event; and perhaps the three most notable descriptors that I can use, off the top of my head, are:

Creative.

Can’t go wrong wit dat, not for me, anyway. And, have I mentioned it is a f-i-l-m f-e-s-t-i-v-a-l, with more stuff than anyone could possibly see?

Briefly, the Actors Panel Was Lots Of Fun.

Out of the three, it was the most robust. Entertaining, with lots of information to share. It’s probably going to amount to more than one post, throughout this week.

All three ‘Coffee Talk’ symposiums were chock-full-of-information; so much, that it seemed they could’ve gone on for much longer than the hour-and-a-half allotted time.

Okay, this is ver-ry cool.

There is a “Lounge”.  It actually is a store that the LA Film Festival took over, for the fest.

There’s a bar, with free drinks.  

And lots of mingling, and you need a press pass or some other kind of hanging tag around your neck to get in.

Last night, I was twittering away. Live from the Red Carpet at the Opening Night Premiere; and afterward, from the Gala Event.

I’m going to continue doing so, throughout the 10 days of the LA Film Fest… And I may even be live blogging by iPhone.

There’s a ton of stuff to cover: narrative films, documentaries, parties, symposiums…and, I will be at them.

My focus, as ever, will be the acting in the films. I’ll be tweeting about the actors at the festival, and may throw in done film reviews, too.

Actor Misconceptions

I got quite a few responses from the “MythBUST #1: Agents” post.  

Few things to say, just for today:

I really wasn’t finished with that post…I think I will continue with the ”ACTOR AGENT” topic until the “ACTOR SOLUTION” stage …that should happen, I guess, by the end of next week, or week after.

For decades, I’ve been accruing and keeping this information (of which I will put all of it on this blog and on the Hollywood Actor Prep Website), and it’s all inside my brain, but I am used to it, and don’t realize how much there really is…  that is, until… each and every time I set out to write a post…

I suddenly am aware that there is a whole lot of ground to cover.  Basically, for every post, there is at least 5 times the amount that I cut-and-save for a later date.  

(There is so much information, that I can’t really figure out a good clear way to organize it on the website, and there is so much to put on there, that I simply keep putting that whole section, of Hollywood Actor Prep, off.  There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in a day!)

The last post was only the beginning, and I will cover all the different kinds of agents, within the stratas of actor representation; so you are educated about the system.  Then, I will go over the different ways to put yourself in a good “agent-representation-readiness” state, so that you can go and try to get one.

Then we’ll discuss determination, moxie, and methods…

I didn’t mean to make it seem absolutely hopeless.  I wasn’t finished yet.

And, as I have written down before… I am really committed to making things better.  I am mulling over and discussing-around the different ways that I can approach the problem.

The More Reader Feedback, The Better

Almost EVERYONE that contacts me, feels sheepish.  They tell me, or warn me, that it may be a “dumb question” or a “stupid”  whatever…

What they don’t know is that those questions and responses are a kind of  great thing for me, that’s when I know that the blog is reaching people, and those that I think it’s suited for.   

I know how mysterious the business appears, from outside “Hollywood”.

I am doing this blog for that very reason.  

When I get the emails, the tweets, the facebook messages, the comments here on the blog: I know, then, better, what needs to be addressed. Each and everytime,  (especially to the emails and the tweets) that’s my litmus as to where to “go” next on the blog, and to what degree.

Those letters + tweets are my golden guide.  Really.

And they melt my heart, as well.

I deeply cherish you all.  And, I “get it”.

Onward and upward…

Regarding Twitter

What a discovery…  And unexpected…

I joined Twitter  (which is the easiest, simplest thing, btw..), because it seemed like a good way to let readers know when I put a blog post up, in the beginning of this blog.

Surprisingly, I have met some wonderful people there who have become real friends, and that I am so glad to be tweeting to, and I wait for their tweets!

Twitter is an odd, kooky, internet invention…Everyone can go on, but all anyone can “post” in the form of “tweet” is one line.  That’s right, just about one sentence.  All of the people that you follow (it can be a few, or 1000’s) post “what they are doing” at any one time.  

It’s great fun. ( You’ll see what I mean, once you get started.)  You can do it straight from your computer, and you can go and read your tweets anytime or all the time.  (I just go on about once or twice a day, but some people get SMS text tweets, all the time, to their cell phone!)

It’s a good way to give Hollywood Actor Prep feedback, or ask questions, and…

…get immediately alerted when I put up a new post!

I am surprised at how much I am digging Twitter.  I have gotten tweets from some extremely cool and creative folks-
