The 2008 Emmys–A Revolution Was Televised

Posted by Dana Kaminski on 22nd September 2008 in Of Interest, Uncategorized

Emmys: How The Gowns Became The Drama (Part I)

Emmys 2008: The Revolution Was Televised

The 60th Emmy Awards show, quietly, signified a cultural and artistic revolution, in TV. The voters of the Academy Of Television Arts and Sciences voted with and integrity; and for truth, artistry, creativity, talent, and intelligence…altogether, that on a level that was not seen prior…

And, there were so many great shows for them to choose from!  Uniquely!  There was a long, solid roster of exceptionally, high-level productions.  And talent.

Remember the song: “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”?*

Well, last night, I–actually–think–it—was.

A television revolution was televised.  A cultural revolution was televised, too.

Emmys Show : American TV Is Something To Be Proud Of

Suddenly, the 2008 Emmys made American Television seem as if it was something to be proud of, overall, for the first time I can remember.  Rather, than be embarrassed by.

(…Before you get mad at me, please hear me out…)

Television is, basically, an American thing.  Made in America, it is viewed throughout the world.  And, it appears as if it is us: America;  reflected on the screen.

Networks: TV Is Not An Artform

And, with no embarrassment, throughout TV history; there has been a certain outright pride, on the part of the networks…a clear acknowledgment,  that television isn’t an artform.

As if the expectation that television could even be an artform, is way out of line. Senseless.

One thing, that network execs insisted on standardizing, was: “How stupid Americans are.”  That, the product should only be made for the lowest taste levels, and brains. They maintained a strict credo, to  ”cater to the lowest common denominator” of the public, to which they assigned a score even lower.

What else guided them?

…Polls (sometimes random);  fear of losing their jobs with wrong decisions, (so they became great at “negating” things: new, or different….sometimes even talent, because it was too unique)…Okay, what else?

…Sponsor pleasing

…And this next one, I actually learned about in college: at a historical time, they made a decision so as not to hear any from some certain, loud-complaining-groups–and that has influenced our TV content to this day.

Add in…  the way that shows and talent are decided upon, by committee vote, and different levels up a corporate ladder, etc.

Which is why, at the networks;  great stuff, or artistic stuff rarely passes through the line, to broadcast; and why there is so much copycat product out there…

What, you think I am not “accounting for taste“??  Then,  you are assuming that the executives are all in their positions, due to having good taste?

Hollywood: Emotional Intelligence Can Mean Brown Probuscis

If you understand how Hollywood works, you’ll see why that makes no sense. That it may not factor in, for promotions. At all.  As for job candidates, taste may never come up, in the interviews. “Agreement” counts, being agreeable.

Out here, to agree with a superior’s taste (even if it stinks) is considered professional maturity; “emotional intelligence”.

A lot of this is generalization. There are many intelligent people in this town, many creative ones, too. Some have great taste; good chance, there may be a lot of them.

The networks are big corporate businesses; ‘Nuff said.?

That’s how television got to be the formula that it is.  In the last few years, the quality has begun to change, and some amazing shows have managed to make it through.

Blah, blah…

What’s that have to do with last night’s Emmys?

Well, what happened, over time, is that the awards shows became just as boring, as general TV.

What drama is there in lackluster nominations, when no one cares about who wins?

Enter… the gown and jewelry show…

The saga: how a dress became the drama.

(Or cleavage and skin show, if you are a staight guy…)

But, the Emmys 60th Show

Ahh, yes, I take a breath and think of it again, refreshed… Yes, the- Emmys-last- night:

The choices of wonderful shows… and the amount of them, were truly groundbreaking.

So was the voting.

To be continued…

(I’ll offer some proof,  and specifics…)

‘Til then,

 ;Dana

“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” was a song by (the very very talented) Gil Scott Heron.

Emmy Nomination Cheat Sheet Is Popular!

Posted by Dana Kaminski on 21st September 2008 in Of Interest

[This post is outdated, so I took out the link.  The post that was linked to this one, can be found in the archives of this blog. Outside of the parenthesis, the post reads the same as before, except for a change in the last few lines.]

The Cheat Sheet for the Emmy categories of Acting Nominees, and Best Show, that I posted two days ago…

turned out to be a surprisingly popular post.   Since, the Emmys are on tonight, I thought I would provide a link for those who might need it last minute.  Use it either straight off of your computer screen; or you can print it out, to  keep a “hard copy” next to you, while the show goes along.

It’s really just a show “program”, that lists all the nominees, of the most popular categories.

It contains everyone who is nominated for the actor category; which category, type of role, show they were acting in,  etc.  Similarly, the shows that are nominated, are all in their respective categories; with corresponding information.

Favorites, then, for the Emmy, can be decided, and rooted for…if you haven’t had a chance to catch-up on who all the nominees are, prior.

Just go to the sidebar of this blog, and look in the archives…You’ll see the Emmy Nominations Cheet Sheet post listed there…Enjoy!

I Received An Ad For This Emmy Awards Program That Is Digital

Posted by Dana Kaminski on 19th September 2008 in Of Interest

I have no connection to these people, in any way…but they are selling the Emmy Awards Show Program in digital form. They sell it online and send it to their customer, digitally.

I thought it might be of interest to some of my readers…especially if you are having an Emmy Awards Party, or are even just a fan…

Again, I can’t vouch for them, I’m not promoting or advertising for them, I get no kickbacks; I am simply passing it on to you.        (Geeee, all this legal stuff is so annoying to have to put in, isn’t it?)

Here’s the link for Zinio and their Emmy Awards Show Program:

www.zinio.com

[I have come back to edit this post because the link wasn't working.  So I went to the site of Zinio, and what I want to warn you about is their offer for "free" online mags.  I thought: sure--I'll check out a sample. Suddenly, I was confronted with a three page questionnaire where I was asked all kinds of questions about my "business" so that they could serve up the magazines that might be most suitable for me.  After spending far too much time trying to answer from their choices, I decided to start again, and make it easier on myself.  I went back to page one and put, for every answer, such choices as : nothing, unemployed...etc.  At the end, they told me that they had no magazines for me at this time!!!

I don’t know if they do that for only the specific magazine I happened to want to sample, or for every mag they offer.

I only know that I hate that stuff.  I really resent when internet sites try to dig out information; even when it is for good reason, I just find it so annoying and somehow intrusive!

I collect your email address, only if you want to leave a comment.  (At this time; and soon I may, also, do a newsletter.)  But, under no circumstances would I ever sell or use your email or dig for more information. Or take up your time uselessly.  Uch.  That stuff drives me crazy.
