Check out actor Allan Wasserman’s Facebook post today, for example:
I like what he wrote about acting career gratitude. I’m a grateful actor too. I’m not seeking acting work, I still am grateful to have been born with an artistic sensibility and acting talent. You, too?
Someone once said to me that an artistic people live their lives in color, whereas others have lives in black and white. All I know is that I think about acting a lot. Many aspects.I never, ever lose the excitement that I have for the art of acting. I never lose sight of how much gratitude I have for my innate, powerful passion for acting.
Allan Wasserman is someone that I don’t know well, but I do know that he keeps a certain integrity, in regards to his acting craft and his acting career; and he uses that as a compass along his career path.(He and I originally connected because I was recommended to him by a manager, as an audition coach.)
If you look at his profile photo, you’ll see that Allan isn’t an acting type that immediately might come to mind when you think about typical Hollywood actors.
But, he’s working as an actor. Today, right now as I write this. He’s at Warner Brothers taping TWO BROKE GIRLS; and when he’s done, he’ll head home to watch himself on BONES tonight.
I’m supportive of actors, but hey, I’m no Pollyanna. Acting is a career (acting) that is fraught with tough times and that’s a given. (It’s even true for actors talented, beautiful, and/or successful.)I’d be either deluded, or plain old inexperienced, if I made the acting business seem like it didn’t have negative aspects. There’s lots of ‘em, and some are big ones, and some are longterm, and for some actors it’s debilitating and unpretty.
Still, the beauty of being an actor…the experience of it…is so glimmeringly, powerfully magnificent; that it’s impossible to explain to others who weren’t born with the passion.
No matter where you’re at in your acting career, it’s a strengthening medicine when you remember the gratitude. It’s even better as a regular practice. So is keeping your integrity about your acting craft, using it as your compass along your acting career path. Like the painted line in the center of your own road; as you walk along and take your actor-knocks, your integrity will reinforce your acting passion and keep the love strong, as you grow artistically.
Both of those two keep you ready to work, and in expectant mode.
Stay in the light, stay grateful about your growth as an actor. About what a gift it is to be one. Start now. And don’t be surprised when you find yourself next year; being grateful, too, about your own acting career prosperity.
Best,
Dana
