…And director Darren Aronofsky texted Mila Kunis that she got the acting part, of ‘Lily’.
Lead actress Natalie Portman thought Kunis would be a good choice to play the other dancer, with whom she would have to have a–shall I say– pas de deux, in the film.
(Portman and Kunis were already friends, and nearly every actor knows that sex scenes of any kind, are never very sexy on a film set. They are awkward and wierd, with their own extra strong set of difficulties that accompany the usual challenges that are organic to any ‘normal’ acting scene.)
—Portman introduced Kunis (in LA) to the director (who was in London) via iChat.
—Kunis and Aronofsky did the normal film audition, 2 section choreography; the first part a getting-to-know-you-as-a-person interview. The true audition, the acting as the role, usually from a script, as the second part.
Although it may seem this was an audition that came about as a type of networking or who-ya-know connecting thing…it was, as almost all auditions and acting jobs truly are gotten, because of past professional acting work. Proven ability.
Darren Aronofsky was familiar with Mila Kunis and her acting ability before he virtually met and auditioned the actor. Prior, he had seen her work, on the screen, in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL.
–“So are you ready to do this?” is what the director texted to the actress, when offering her the film role.
Thinking out loud…
Mila Kunis was born in the Ukraine. My Kaminsky side of the family (yes, that is the orig spelling of my name) is originally from the same part of the world. I’ll make an educated guess and say that Darren Aronofsky has ancestry from the same part of the world. And, as for Natalie Portman…who knows, she could be also—Portman may not be her family’s original name. We could all be from the Ukraine.
I’m wondering if there is some chemical in the water there that creates artistically minded offspring. Something especially particular to the dramatic arts.
(Ever heard of Stanislavsky?)
