Armie Hammer: Acting In The Social Network, Humanizing The Winkelvoss Twins Onscreen
In this Hollywood Actor Prep video, Armie Hammer talks about one of the acting problems that needed overcoming, when prepping
these particular characters he played in the film, Cameron and Taylor Vinkelvoss.
From what he says, I assume that he is not only sharing his own acting method and approach to how he played his own character[s] in this movie, but also the perspective of all the actors, and probably the director, David Fincher; that may have been a starting overview, from the early prep stages. It’s possible that the actors then made their acting choices and developed their own individual characters, keeping their shared philosophy at the base of their acting choices.
In the video, Armie Hammer divulges his overall perspective on the characters, how he viewed the Winkelvoss twins, and how he made particular choices, so their portrayal was as dimensional people. Why that was necessary.
Aside from being, of course, simply great acting.
Armie Hammer:
With these twins…you have two guys…on paper it seems like they have everything…
We wanted to make sure that [*a stereotypical negative result*] wasn’t the case , because at the end of the day, you need to understand the human element, to all these characters. That’s what makes this movie work.
…That’s why, at the end of the movie, you can’t really hate everyone, because you understand them all, and where they come from. Even if you don’t agree, you understand why they are doing what they do.
…Was a matter of creating these guys who aren’t these caricatures, or these big jocks who want to pick on the nerd. Instead, they just have a very hard time understanding what this 21st century man is all about, and how to deal with that kind of modern man.
Best,

Dana
