Is Acting Art? Fine Actors Debate This On Video

I, Dana, Absolutely Know That Acting Is An Art Form
…And that we, actors, are artists.
Here’s some of our finest male actors, that had stellar performances this year.
- Nicolas Cage
- Stanley Tucci
- Colin Firth
- Peter Sarsgaard
- Morgan Freeman
They debate whether acting is an art or a craft. Or what else? (I don’t know, because I am steadfast, and arrogantly positive that acting is an art form.)
What do you think? I would really love to hear your opinion about this.
Happy New Year To You!
Best,
Dana

LOVED this video (watched it a couple weeks ago). I think a problem with this question is that it is presented as an either-or. Acting is both an art and a craft, given the definitions most people give to both.
It is a craft in that it can absolutely be improved through practice. I really dislike the word “talent” because I feel like that implies one either has the ability to do something or not. Sure, some are pre-disposed to certain things, but every great actor has had years of practice honing their craft.
At the same time, acting affects the emotions, the senses, and moves people. It has at its core, creativity. In that sense it is absolutely an art.

I LOVED this! Thanks so much for sharing it, Dana. I agree with what Stanley Tucci said about absolute truth and individual truth creating art – WORD! I also agreed with Nicholas Cage when he said that as an actor your whole body and mind are your instrument and you’re creating art with it. :)

Thanks Maria for your comment.
Ben, I agree with what you said, about acting being both an artform, and a craft. I have a little bit of a differing definition on why I think actors are artists, perhaps. Mulling that over…( and you must know how much I love to mull!)
The way you described the craft part is so succinct and right on, in my view, and inspires a blog post!
Thanks.
Happy New Year!
