Groundbreaking For The Movie Industry
Wayne Wang, the director, is about to premiere this new feature tonight, but you can see it here right now. It is a groundbreaking event, altogether, because he is broadcasting his premiere, on the web! And, it costs nothing… tonight: October 17,1008, on YouTube. This film is called “The Princess Of Nebraska”, and it is a “first” because he is major Hollywood director, and it’s an original story. Don’t get confused, however, because Wang does have another film out now, in the theaters…That one is a different movie.
Why a free web premiere?? Because…
- Thematically, the internet plays a large part in “The Princess Of Nebraska”. The story follows the evolution of a young woman’s identity, while using the ‘net.
- It’s an “artistic movie“, and they are hoping to establish a trend; so that movies may get exposure on the internet, so smaller films can find audiences. They are hoping that smaller films will make their way and thrive, on the internet: as happened with the music industry. (No longer a hit-making creating machine; with all the limitations that come from that one perspective….).
I am hoping, along with them…I’m wishing on every star in the sky: that more artistic films, that smaller films, that more literate films, that films made by auteurs…(I am scrinching my eyes shut, and my hands are clasped with this wish…)I sincerely hope this makes a “home”, that tonight begins a solid and sincere environment for quality and high level product to be seen and appreciated, and also to get support for endeavors that aren’t major blockbusters, or same-old-same-old acccchhhttt. And that in turn, more “auteur” product gets made, and higher level productions get inspired by this.(…A big exhale, and I unclench as I let my wish float up to the sky.)
A Blog On “Variety”
Variety’s Anne Thompson, who has a blog called “Thompson On Hollywood” had “The Princess Of Nebraska” up on her blog, for this sneak preview, and that is how I knew and where I got it from…
